WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Tonight, following the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, Donald Trump delivered his second State of the Union speech.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

“Tonight, Donald Trump reminded us he is completely disconnected from the reality of the damage he is inflicting on our families and our communities. In two long years, Trump has divided and deeply damaged our country -- he has shut the government down and threatened borderlands communities with a manufactured crisis, put our clean air, lands and water up for grabs for corporate polluters, refused to even acknowledge the climate crisis, and injected self-serving corruption and distortion into nearly every decision he’s made. And he’s regularly and consistently attacked public health, refusing to address toxic PFAS pollution and rolling back safeguards from mercury pollution that contributes to childhood cancer.

“Our union is in a state of disrepair because of Trump, but it is people and communities across America who are doing the hard work to get our country back on track. Women, people of color, Muslims, Native Americans and LGBTQ people were elected to Congress in record numbers as a direct rebuttal to Trump’s agenda. This is only the beginning. Together, across the country, the public is united and more committed than ever to fight for a country that works for everyone in it.
