CONCORD, NH -- The New Hampshire Sierra Club supports the House and Senate approval of SB168, a bill that would expand the electric solar adoption standard for all of the electric utilities, and calls on Governor Sununu to make the bill law.

The bill updates the state’s Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) requiring utilities to increase the amount of electricity generated by solar power from .7 percent to 5.4 percent by the year 2025. This is a modest and achievable increase compared to Massachusetts which has a goal of 16 percent and has already achieved 10 percent.

For the past several months, the New Hampshire Chapter of the Sierra Club has activated Granite Staters to urge Governor Sununu to allow SB168 to become law. NH Sierra Club volunteers have sent nearly 1,000 email messages to the legislature and the Governor and made over 100 calls directly to the Governor’s office.

Catherine Corkery, senior organizing representative for the Sierra Club, added the following statement:

“SB168 is a common sense bill that has widespread support across the state. As the climate crisis gains steam, it’s urgent that we shift our energy consumption from fossil fuels to clean energy. Such an investment in solar development will also bring jobs to the state and save ratepayers money. We urge the governor to listen to his constituents and make SB168 law.”
