Washington, DC -- Shortly after midnight Monday morning, 48,000 United Auto Workers walked out of General Motors plants and operations to demand fair pay and adequate benefits.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

“The Sierra Club rises in solidarity with the United Auto Workers at GM operations across the country as they demand family-sustaining careers. GM has committed to expanding its fleet of electric vehicles -- after pressure by organizations including UAW -- but as it does so, it must also commit to supporting the workers who will be the backbone of this transition by ensuring they have the pay, job security, and healthcare they deserve. The transition to a clean energy economy must not leave behind those who are doing the work to help our country reach these goals. We thank the United Auto Workers for fighting to put people and communities over corporate profits and for demonstrating the change we can all affect when people rise up together.”
