WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, in its first formal vote on the impeachment inquiry, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution to guide the impeachment process with open, transparent, and public hearings.

As the nation’s largest grassroots environmental advocacy organization, with millions of members and supporters nationwide, the Sierra Club is a key part of U.S. civil society and a bastion for both environmental protection and safeguarding American democracy. The Sierra Club and the American people require a functioning government and democratic access to that government to achieve our mission of protecting the human and natural environment.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

"Over the past few weeks the House has worked to collect the facts about Donald Trump’s deeply troubling behavior, and today they voted to take the necessary next steps to begin a formal and transparent inquiry into his pattern of abusing the law to cover up his self-serving actions. Trump is threatening the integrity of laws we by which we all abide, undermining the core principles of our democracy, and ignoring the presidential oath of office -- and many Republicans in Congress will do and say anything to protect him. Enough is enough.

“If our democratic norms and the law mean nothing, then the legal and democratic tools we use to protect clean air and water, public lands, and a safe climate could become meaningless. Trump’s actions repeatedly prove that he is a danger to the health and safety of the American public, our Constitution and our country. This vote is a necessary and appropriate step forward in holding Trump accountable and making our democracy work for the people again."
