WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, the House Judiciary Committee voted to approve charges that President Donald Trump abused his power and obstructed a congressional investigation. This sets up the third presidential impeachment in U.S. history with the full House voting on the articles of impeachment next week.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

"Sierra Club commends House Judiciary Democrats for moving the articles of impeachment forward as it is abundantly clear that President Trump abused his power and obstructed justice. Trump put his personal political interests ahead of the country, undermining the integrity of the next election and violating his oath of office to uphold the constitution. These corrupt acts and abuses of power threaten the legal and democratic infrastructure we use to keep our communities healthy and safe. He must be held accountable. Our clean water is at stake. Our clean air is at stake. A safe climate is at stake. And our democracy is at stake. Unfortunately, congressional Republicans are willfully ignoring the clear evidence of high crimes and putting their party ahead of their country. We ask all of Congress to stand for free and fair elections, checks and balances, and with the Constitution by voting to impeach the President."
