Sierra Club’s Statement on the United States Surpassing 100,000 Deaths from COVID-19

Oakland, CA -- Today, the United States saw the number of known deaths from COVID-19 surpass the 100,000 mark, while tens of thousands continue to contract the virus on a daily basis. The pandemic continues to expose inequity in the country as communities of color, Tribal Nations, and rural regions see higher death rates and a severe lack of access to care.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

“The profound trauma growing in our communities as a result of this pandemic and failures by the Trump Administration is immeasurable. So many of us have lost loved ones, and even more of us are struggling to grapple with this new normal. During times of disaster, we must join together in solidarity to lift one another up as we work to rebuild and regain peace of mind.

“While it’s so easy to feel alone right now, we are and remain joined together. We’re joined by our collective humanity and by our efforts to give voice to the unheard  and demand justice for our friends, our families and our neighbors. Despite the uncertainty ahead, I know that we will rise together, stronger than ever, to continue our work to build a better tomorrow for all people.”
