Declaración del Sierra Club sobre el Acribillamiento de Jacob Blake

Kenosha, WI — El director ejecutivo del Sierra Club, Michael Brune, y los copresidentes del Grupo Southeast Gateway de Wisconsin del Sierra Club, Tom Ritkowski y Laura Buska, emitieron la siguiente declaración tras el acribillamiento de Jacob Blake por parte de oficiales del Departamento de Policía de Kenosha. En junio, tras el trágico asesinato de George Floyd, el Sierra Club se unió a activistas de justicia racial para urgir a que se desfinanciara a la policía e invertir en iniciativas que aseguren la supervivencia de personas negras.

 

En julio de 2019, el Sierra Club se unió a una coalición de justicia ambiental y grupos ambientales nacionales para emitir una plataforma nacional climática justa y equitativa que se centre en la justicia racial, climática y ambiental para mejorar la salud pública y el bienestar de todas las comunidades. 

 

 

“Ningún miembro de nuestras comunidades debería sentirse amenazado por quienes nos deben mantenernos seguros. Cuando nos unimos a nuestros socios para exigir la inmediata desfinanciación de la policía, lo hicimos específicamente para acabar con el terrorismo contra las comunidades de color por parte de las fuerzas policiales. En lugar de cumplir con su deber de proteger y servir al público, demasiado a menudo, departamentos de todo el país están hiriendo, aterrando y matando a personas negras sin ni siquiera pensarlo debido a la animosidad contra los negros en Estados Unidos.

 

“En lugar de pasar tiempo con sus tres hijos durante esta devastadora pandemia, Jacob Blake lucha por su vida en el Froedtert Hospital. Los policías no reconocieron la humanidad del Sr. Blake ni la de sus tres hijos, quienes presenciaron el ataque a corta distancia. Tenemos que unirnos y exigir que estos oficiales sean arrestados y acusados inmediatamente. También seguimos exigiendo que el Procurador General Daniel Cameron inmediatamente arreste y procese criminalmente a los tres oficiales que asesinaron a Breonna Taylor en su hogar el 13 marzo de este año.

 

“Nos queda mucho por hacer y no podemos cumplir con nuestra misión de “enrolar a la humanidad” para proteger el planeta si continuamos dedicando recursos a la militarización de los departamentos de policía. Lo que está claro es que el sistema está roto y que la policía no sirve a nuestra humanidad colectiva. Como dijo Martin Luther King, Jr., la injusticia en cualquier parte es injusticia en todas las partes. Depende de nosotros exigir progreso e invertir en recursos que realmente mejoren a todas las comunidades”.

Sierra Club Statement on the Shooting of Jacob Blake

Kenosha, WI -- Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune and the Sierra Club Southeast Gateway Group of Wisconsin Co-Chairs Tom Rutkowski and Laura Buska issued the following statement following the shooting of Jacob Blake by Kenosha Police Department officers. In June, following the tragic murder of George Floyd, the Sierra Club joined racial justice activists to call to defund the police and invest in initiatives that ensure the survival of Black people. In July of 2019, the Sierra Club joined forces with a coalition of environmental justice and national environmental groups to release a just and equitable national climate platform that centers racial, climate and environmental justice to improve the public health and well-being of all communities.

This is the statement:

"No member of our communities should ever feel threatened by those charged with keeping us safe. When we joined our partners in calling for the immediate defunding of the police, we did it specifically to put an end to terrorism against Black and Brown people by law enforcement. Instead of fulfilling their duty to protect and serve the people, all too often, police throughout the country are hurting, terrorizing, and killing Black people without a second thought due to the anti-Blackness that runs deep throughout the U.S. 

"Instead of spending time with his three children during this already devastating pandemic, Jacob Blake is fighting for his life in Froedtert Hospital. Mr. Blake’s humanity nor the humanity of his three children, who witnessed the attack from a few feet away, were recognized by the officers. We must join together and demand that these officers are immediately arrested and charged. We also continue to demand that Attorney General Daniel Cameron immediately arrest and criminally charge the three officers who murdered Breonna Taylor in her own home on March 13, 2020. 

"Our work is far from over and we cannot fulfill our mission to ‘enlist humanity’ to protect the planet if we continue to direct resources towards the militarization of police departments. What is clear is that the system is broken and police officers do not serve our collective humanity. As Martin Luther King Jr. stated, injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. It is up to us to demand better and invest in resources that actually make all communities safer."
