Biden Administration Must Rapidly Change Course on Fracked Gas Exports

Today, the US Energy Information Administration released new findings showing that the United States is on track to have the world’s largest LNG export capacity by the end of next year.

Liquified fracked gas is primarily made up of methane, a greenhouse gas more than 80 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. Recent reports from the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and International Energy Agency affirm that rapidly cutting methane pollution is critical to avert the worst impacts of the climate crisis. The process of getting fracked gas to market harms communities across the country, leaving toxic pollution behind at every step from extraction by fracking, to transport by pipeline, to liquefaction and export. There is also evidence that expanded gas exports are contributing to rising energy costs for American families and businesses.

In response, Kelly Sheehan, Senior Director of Energy Campaigns for the Sierra Club, released the following statement:

“The Biden administration wants to project global leadership on climate, but it’s impossible to do that while also having the dubious honor of being the world’s largest gas exporter. Fracked gas is a fossil fuel just like coal or oil, and the push to export more of it abroad is harming our communities and driving us toward climate chaos. The Biden administration must align its actions with its ambition on climate and act immediately to stop the expansion of fossil fuel exports.”
