Boston, MA — On Wednesday, Mayor Michelle Wu announced lower electricity rates for residents who are opted into the city’s Community Choice Electricity (CCE) program. With local utility provider Eversource increasing their rates for the winter, all CCE rates will cost less beginning on January 1, 2022, in addition to sourcing more local clean energy. The average Eversource Basic Service Residential Customer is expected to spend $27 per month more than a customer on the CCE Standard option.

The Optional Green 100 plan will be nearly 2 cents less per kWh than the Eversouce basic rate which is set at 15 cents per kWh, making it an ideal time to opt up to 100% renewable energy.  For average residential users, that is a savings of about $70 over a six month period for 100% renewable content compared to Eversource’s 18%, the state requirement for renewable electricity.

This is a pivotal milestone for the CCE program which underscores the Wu administration’s commitment to making Boston a Green New Deal city that is affordable, accessible and sustainable for all residents. ‘

In response, Boston Lead Organizer Michele Brooks issued the following statement:

“We are thankful for Mayor Wu’s leadership in making clean energy more affordable and accessible to residents of Boston. This is an important step in reducing energy burden and realizing energy justice as we head into the cold winter months. The CCE program demonstrates that in addition to the climate and health benefits, renewable energy can cost less! We encourage all residents to make sure they are enrolled in the program, and to Opt up to the 100% renewable energy plan if it is feasible.”
