Washington, DC — Este Día de la Tierra, miles de miembros del Sierra Club y sus aliados y activistas se van a lanzar a las calles y por medio del arte e instarán al Presidente Biden y al Congreso a que cumplan sus promesas de invertir seriamente en el combate contra la crisis climática, la dificultad de pagar por bienes y servicios, y la rampante injusticia social.
El sábado, 23 de abril, el Sierra Club se unirá a decenas de organizaciones en Washington, DC, Phoenix, AZ, Atlanta, GA, y otros puntos del país para demostrar el abrumador apoyo a una serie de inversiones en el clima, el cuidado de la salud, los empleos y la justicia en general. Este movimiento de movimientos alzará las voces de las personas de bajos ingresos, y comunidades latinas y negras que sufren desproporcionadamente los desastres climáticos, inequidades económicas, y los impactos de salud negativos de la contaminación del aire y el agua.

El presidente del Sierra Club, Ramón Cruz, emitió la siguiente declaración al respecto:
“El Presidente Biden y el Congreso tienen una oportunidad generacional para abordar de lleno los peligros existenciales que nos presentan las temperaturas en aumento causadas por las emisiones de gases de invernadero, como causa directa de la codicia y la negligente falta de previsión.
“Los reciente informes de la ONU dejan claro que la humanidad tiene solo una opción para evitar la calamidad completa: abandonar con premura los combustibles fósiles y aceptar la energía limpia, creando así la oportunidad de generar millones de empleos. No solo tenemos la obligación de abordar la crisis climática, sino también los medios para hacerlo. Pero hacerlo requiere la voluntad política para invertir al ritmo y volumen que exige la crisis.
“La robusta acción climática debe equipararse con inversiones que ayuden a las familias contra el encarecimiento de la vida, desde el cuidado infantil a las cuentas de la luz y al costo de los medicamentos. Un plan completo tiene que fomentar millones de buenos empleos, apoyados en los sindicatos por medio de inversiones en el cuidado de la salud, energía limpia, buenos transporte públicos, manufactura limpia, y resiliencia climática en todos los sectores de la economía. El Congreso tiene que aprobar inversiones que aseguren justicia ambiental para las comunidades que durante décadas han soportado las injusticias sistémicas de la contaminación de combustibles fósiles.
“Durante más de 50 años, el Día de la Tierra ha supuesto un faro que resalta lo que es posible cuando la gente se une y defiende cambios cruciales. Este Día de la Tierra, el Congreso tiene una crucial oportunidad para hacer inversiones transformativas y salvaguardar la salud de todos los habitantes del planeta. Sierra Club Joins Nationwide Earth Day Actions Calling for Investments in Climate, Care, Jobs, and Justice
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- This Earth Day, thousands of Sierra Club and coalition members and activists are taking to the streets and creating public art to call on President Biden and Congress to fulfill their commitments for large-scale investments to address the climate crisis, the unaffordability of basic goods and services, and rampant injustice.
On Saturday, April 23, the Sierra Club will join dozens of organizations in actions in Washington, DC, Phoenix, AZ, and Atlanta, GA, and in distributed actions across the country to demonstrate the overwhelming support for a suite of investments in climate, care, jobs, and justice. This movement of movements will raise up the voices of those in low-income and Black and Brown communities who are disproportionately affected by climate-fueled disasters, economic inequity, and the negative health impacts of air and water pollution.

Sierra Club President Ramon Cruz Released the Following Statement:
“President Biden and Congress have before them a once-in-a-generation chance to meaningfully tackle the existential dangers presented by warming temperatures caused by rising greenhouse gas emissions — at heart, caused by greed and willful lack of foresight.
“The recent IPCC reports make it clear that humanity has only one option to avert complete calamity: to swiftly transition away from fossil fuels and onto clean energy – creating an opportunity to put millions of Americans to work while doing so. We not only have an imperative to address the climate crisis but also the means to do so; however, doing so requires the political will to make transformational investments at the scale and speed the crisis demands.
“Robust climate action must be paired with investments that will help families handle the ever-rising costs of everything from child care to home electricity to prescription drugs. A comprehensive package must foster millions of family-sustaining union jobs through investments in health care, clean energy, transit, clean manufacturing, climate resilience, and more across all sectors of the economy. And Congress must pass investments that will secure environmental justice for communities that have long borne the brunt of fossil fuel pollution and systemic injustices.
“For more than 50 years, Earth Day has served as a beacon highlighting what is possible when people come together to advocate for critical change. This Earth Day, Congress has a vital opportunity to make crucial, transformational investments to ensure the health of all people and our planet. The Sierra Club calls on the President and Congress to act. It is time to deliver — our climate and our communities can't wait.”
