WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service initiated an emergency action to protect giant sequoias, in an area covering over 13,000 acres.

In response, Athan Manuel, Sierra Club Lands Protection Program Director, released the following statement:

“We welcome the Administration’s efforts today to use a science-based approach to address the threats facing some of our oldest and most iconic trees. The value of old and mature growth trees cannot be understated as a key tool in our toolbox to address the most harmful effects of climate change, and we look forward to working with the Administration moving forward to support nature-based climate solutions.”
