Washington, DC — La administración Biden anunció la semana pasada su nuevo compromiso con la iniciativa Comprar Limpio, la cual capacita al gobierno federal para abastecerse de productos industriales que fomenten inversiones en reducir las emisiones de carbono.
El Sierra Club aplaude este anuncio y urge con insistencia que la iniciativa se expanda para abordar los profundos impactos ambientales y de salud pública de la producción industrial.
Como respuesta, la directora del Programa de Economía Sustentable del Sierra Club, Hebah Kassem, emitió la siguiente declaración:
“La iniciativa Comprar Limpio de la Casa Blanca subraya la importancia que gobiernos estatales y locales usen los impuestos para luchar contra la crisis climática, apoyar a los trabajadores y construir comunidades saludables. Este anuncio y las recientes noticias del Departamento de Energía de financiar la fabricación de baterías para vehículos eléctricos y la manufactura de productos limpios significan pasos importantes hacia la descarbonización de la industria.
“Aunque estos son pasos prometedores, nos gustaría ver iniciativas como estas que también aborden la contaminación que castiga a comunidades en primera línea, y retos ambientales como la biodiversidad y el agotamiento de recursos naturales. Urgimos a la administración a adoptar un marco de trabajo más amplio en la transformación industrial que se centre en la salud pública, la justicia ambiental y la gestión sustentable de recursos”.

Buy Clean Announcement Shows Promise, Should Go Further
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Last week, the Biden administration announced its new commitments to the Buy Clean initiative, which leverages the government’s vast purchases of industrial products to drive manufacturing investments that reduce carbon emissions. The Sierra Club welcomes this announcement and strongly urges the expansion of the initiative to address the full scope of the environmental and health impacts of industrial production.
In Response, Sierra Club Living Economy Director Hebah Kassem Released the Following Statement:
“The White House announcement on Buy Clean underscores the importance of getting involvement and buy-in from state and local leadership in using tax dollars to fight the climate crisis, support workers, and build healthy communities. This announcement and last week’s news from the Department of Energy on funding for electric vehicle battery manufacturing and the production of clean manufactured goods mark bold steps forward in industrial decarbonization efforts.
“Although these are promising steps, we’d like to see initiatives like this also address toxic pollution that harms frontline communities, as well as pressing environmental challenges like biodiversity and resource depletion. We urge the administration to work toward a broader framework for industrial transformation that centers community health, environmental justice, and sustainable resource management.”
