Boston, MA - Today, Mayor Michelle Wu celebrated the arrival of the first two electric school buses to the Boston Public Schools (BPS) fleet, with 18 more to come over the next several weeks, which will serve an estimated 2,561 students across 42 schools. These electric school buses will replace existing diesel buses and were funded through the district’s operating budget and the American Rescue Plan. The ultimate target is for the entire fleet to be electrified by 2030.
Additionally, BPS is training workers – drivers, mechanics, operations staff, and emergency responders – to ensure they are familiar with the bus design and operation.
In response to the announcement, Veena Dharmaraj, Director of Transportation at the Sierra Club Massachusetts Chapter, issued the following statement:
“We are excited to see the arrival of these electric school buses on Boston routes taking kids to school, and we can’t wait for the day when no child has to board a bus spewing diesel pollution again. Electric school buses are better for our climate, for our kids and bus drivers, and for the health and safety of our communities.”
