Brownsville, Texas — Tras años de activismo en Estados Unidos y Europa, el banco francés Société Générale confirmó anoche que ha retirado su apoyo financiero al altamente controvertido proyecto Rio Grande LNG de gas fósil en el puerto de Brownsville.
El banco había sido el objetivo de activistas en Estados Unidos y Francia desde 2017, cuando se reveló que era el consejero financiero del proyecto.
NextDecade, la compañía tras el proyecto Rio Grande LNG, lleva años de retraso en la financiación del mismo, y este mes anunció que retrasaría la Decisión Inversora Final hasta el verano. Rio Grande LNG sigue confrontando varios retos, incluyendo un pleito interpuesto por el Sierra Club para que la Comisión Regulatoria Federal de Energía (FERC) revise la declaración de impacto ambiental del proyecto ya que no consideró adecuadamente las implicaciones de justicia ambiental y climáticas de la iniciativa.
En octubre de 2022, el Sierra Club, Rainforest Action Network y otras organizaciones afines emitieron un reporte sobre los riesgos al Valle del Río Grande de dos propuestas de gas fósil—Rio Grande LNG y Texas LNG—y la infraestructura asociada con ellos, el Gasoducto de Río Grande. “Viajamos a París en 2017 para reunirnos con funcionarios de Société Générale. Protestamos fuera de sus oficinas, confrontamos a sus accionistas y nos abuchearon en su reunión. Años y años de confrontar a estos bancos y exigir que abandonen nuestras tierras sagradas nos han llevado a estas grandes victorias. El banco francés BNP Paribas detuvo su apoyo a Texas LNG en 2017, y Société Générale finalmente ha hecho lo mismo con Rio Grande LNG”, dijo Juan Mancías.
“Esta victoria costó siete años de esfuerzo. Nuestra comunidad y la tribu Carrizo Comecrudo han forzado a los bancos a retirar su apoyo al proyecto Rio Grande LNG que ya está destruyendo tierras tribales sagradas, contaminaría el Valle del Río Grande y dañaría el clima de todos. La retirada de Société Générale es una advertencia al resto de los grandes bancos: no apoyen las explotaciones de gas fósil ni de gas fósil licuado”, indicó Rebekah Hinojosa.

South Texas community responds to French bank’s withdrawal from Rio Grande LNG
BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS — After years of campaigning by activists in the US and Europe, French bank Société Générale confirmed yesterday it has withdrawn financial support for the highly controversial proposed Rio Grande LNG project at the Port of Brownsville, Texas. The bank had been the target of US and French activists since 2017, when it was first listed as the financial advisor of the project.
NextDecade, the company behind the Rio Grande LNG project, has been behind on the project’s timeline for years, and in March 2023 announced it would delay the project’s Final Investment Decision (FID) until summer 2023. Rio Grande LNG still faces several challenges, including a lawsuit from the Sierra Club asking the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to re-review the project’s environmental impact statement (EIS) because it failed to adequately consider the project’s environmental justice and climate impacts.
In October 2022, the Sierra Club, Rainforest Action Network, and partner organizations released a report on the risks to the Rio Grande Valley from two LNG proposals – Rio Grande LNG and Texas LNG — and associated pipeline infrastructure — the Rio Bravo Pipeline. The report combats false solutions and details community opposition, climate and health impacts, ecosystem damage, and the reputational & financial risk to the institutions financing the projects.

“We traveled to Paris in 2017 to meet with Société Générale bank officials. We protested outside their bank offices, confronted their shareholders, and were booed at their meeting. Years and years of facing these banks and demanding that they step off our sacred lands and sacred sites have led us to these great victories. French bank BNP Paribas stopped its support for Texas LNG in 2017, and Société Générale has finally withdrawn from Rio Grande LNG,” said Juan Mancias, chairman of the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe of Texas.
"Today's victory is seven years in the making. Our community and the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe have been pushing banks to pull their support for the proposed Rio Grande LNG gas project that is already destroying sacred Native lands, would pollute the Rio Grande Valley, and wreck the climate. Société Générale's withdrawal from Rio Grande LNG is a warning to all other major banks: Stop supporting fracking and LNG," said Rebekah Hinojosa, a Brownsville resident and campaign representative with the Sierra Club.
