WASHINGTON, DC - Former Congressman Tom Suozzi (D) today won the endorsements of the Sierra Club, the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund, the NRDC Action Fund, and the New York League of Conservation Voters Federal Fund in the special election to represent New York’s 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House. The groups cited Suozzi’s extensive pro-environment voting record and his track record of delivering environmental wins for his district.

"I am grateful to the New York League of Conservation Voters Federal Fund, the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund, the NRDC Action Fund, and the Sierra Club for recognizing my three decades-long commitment to preserve, protect and clean our air, land, and water,” Suozzi said. “Just the other day, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act, and on that day, I saw an eagle fly across the sky in my hometown of Glen Cove. The hard work of a lot of dedicated people can produce results!"

"Tom Suozzi has the experience and knowledge to confront the environmental challenges of New York's Third District in Congress," said Eva Hernandez, Sierra Club Managing Director. "As a lifelong resident, he knows how vulnerable the area is to the impacts of climate change, including rising sea levels and more frequent and intense storms. In Congress, his vote was critical in passing the largest-ever federal investment in our environment to help avoid the very worst of the climate crisis. Tom Suozzi is the candidate who will help us meet the moment and return honesty and decency to this seat in Congress. The Sierra Club is proud to endorse him in the February 13 special election."

“Thomas Suozzi has a proven track record fighting for the environment and for our communities during his time in Congress,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “New York is experiencing the impacts of the climate crisis first hand, from deadly heat waves to flooding to smoke from massive wildfires in the north, and New Yorkers deserve leaders who will put people over polluters and special interests. LCV Action Fund is proud to support Suozzi to fight for a more sustainable future for all.”

“Tom Suozzi is the only proven environmental champion in this race,” said Kevin S. Curtis, executive director of the NRDC Action Fund. “He has an impressive and consistent record of fighting for clean air, clean water and a sustainable environment for his constituents. His opponent, meanwhile, is proud to run with the support of the far-right Conservative Party, which opposes common-sense policies to grow the clean energy economy and keep New York families safe from pollution.”

Whether it was orchestrating major cleanups of Superfund and brownfield sites as Mayor of Glen Cove, or investing in water quality and open spaces as Nassau County Executive, or securing federal funds for water infrastructure and the Long Island Sound as a congressman, Tom Suozzi has a long and successful track record of using public service to protect the environment,” said Julie Tighe, President of the New York League of Conservation Voters Federal Fund. “We were proud to name Tom Environmentalist of the Year in 2008 and we’re thrilled to endorse his candidacy for the NY-03 congressional seat in 2024.
