DENVER - This week Colorado utilities filed a request for reconsideration against the Trump administration's illegal coal orders following similar requests from public interest groups and Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser.

Tri-State Generation and Transmission and Platte River Power Authority's (PRPA) argue the federal government's intervention to keep the Craig 1 coal unit operating violates multiple laws and lacks justification. The Attorney General's intervention also highlights the absence of evidence for an "energy emergency," as Colorado's energy grid remains stable and reliable.

Checking another wishlist item for coal executives, Trump's EPA recently denied Colorado's Regional Haze Plan in an effort to artificially prolong the life of coal plants.

In response, Jess Eidbo, Senior Campaign Advisor, Energy Markets and Transmission at Sierra Club released following statement:

"We want to thank Attorney General Phil Weiser and his team for their efforts against the Trump administration's nonsensical order that threatens both air quality and energy affordability. The fact that major utilities have also filed their own protests against the order shows that utilities, environmentalists and officials are all concerned that the 202(c) order will drive up electricity prices and provide no public benefit. We hope for more efforts to resist the Trump administration's coal executive handouts, including the recent denial of the state's Regional Haze plan."
