Washington, DC – Tonight, Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Loren Blackford released the following statement:
“Donald Trump may talk tough, but time and again he proves incapable of leading. Withdrawing from the UNFCCC is an abandonment of America’s opportunity to drive the global economy into the future, ceding jobs and economic growth to China and other countries. As nations around the world are creating jobs and improving affordability by investing in clean energy, Trump is laying off Americans from those jobs while further entrenching the U.S. even deeper in expensive fossil fuels. He’s so eager to do the bidding of the oil and gas industry, he’s begun seizing fossil fuel interests by force in other nations.
“On the one-year anniversary of the wildfires that stole dozens of lives, thousands of homes, and the sense of safety for millions as it reduced Los Angeles communities to ash, Trump is making it clear he has no interest in protecting Americans from the rapidly increasing impacts on our health and safety of the worsening climate crisis. This is not leadership, it is cowardice.”
