WASHINGTON, D.C. — The national electric vehicle (EV) charging network is making tangible progress: Texas recently awarded $226 million for 321 new charging stations funded through  the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program; Arizona just opened its first three federally funded  fast-charging stations, with dozens more planned statewide; Colorado awarded over $23 million in federal and state-funded grants to add 270 fast-charging stations across the state; and EV charging at commercial sites in Hawaii more than doubled in the first half of 2026, with many of the new installations located at NEVI stations.

Since the Trump administration’s unlawful freeze of the NEVI program was lifted following successful litigation by Sierra Club, its partners, and a coalition of states, hundreds of millions of dollars in NEVI funding have been committed to charging projects.

These recent developments are emblematic of progress across the country and underscore the importance of maintaining federal support for the NEVI program as Congress negotiates its next transportation funding package.

Sierra Club Clean Transportation for All Director Katherine García released the following statement:

“Building out and expanding the EV charging network is essential for giving drivers the confidence to switch to EVs powered by cheap electricity. Thanks to NEVI, drivers across the country are able to charge their cars and avoid record-high gas prices. As lawmakers begin negotiating the next extension of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, Congress must reauthorize and fund the NEVI program to ensure states can continue to expand a convenient charging network.”
