OAKLAND -- On Wednesday, the menstrual underwear brand Thinx settled an up to $5 million class action lawsuit that claimed its products contain PFAS chemicals, or Per- and Poly-Fluoroalkyl Substances. PFAS are synthetic chemicals widely used in consumer products like raincoats, food containers, and furniture, because they make paper and fabrics stain and water-resistant. These “forever chemicals” are under intense scrutiny because they build up in people’s bodies, never break down in the environment, and are associated with a variety of health problems including cancer, immune system, and reproductive system harms. The issue was first uncovered by Sierra magazine Ms. Green author Jessian Choy in January 2020, who published an investigation about contamination in Thinx brand menstrual underwear after mailing a sample to Dr. Graham Peaslee, a nuclear scientist and Notre Dame professor, for analysis.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Today, the National PFAS Contamination Coalition, Sierra Club, Center for Health Environment and Justice, and more than 60 other organizations sent a letter to the Biden Administration calling for the safe and expeditious clean up of PFAS-contaminated federal sites. PFAS, or Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl substances, are synthetic chemicals that are widely used in consumer products and at military and industrial sites. These “forever chemicals” never break down in the environment, and exposure is linked to a variety of health problems including kidney and testicular cancer, damaged immune systems, and harm to the liver, thyroid, and pancreatic function.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Today, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a dramatic revision to its drinking water limits for four toxic PFAS chemicals. The agency is lowering its lifetime health advisory levels for two PFAS chemicals - PFOS and PFOA - by more than 1000-fold to 20 and 4 parts per quadrillion, respectively. EPA is also setting new health advisories for two common PFAS chemicals that were invented as replacements - known as GenX and PFBS, to 10 and 2000 parts per trillion respectively.

May 23, 2022: Cancer Free Economy Network (CFE) together with Sierra Club and Center for Health, Environment & Justice (CHEJ) will convene a two-day virtual symposium today, May 23 and tomorrow, May 24 beginning at 2:00 PM EDT. The symposium builds on testimonies given by impacted community members at CFE’s November 2021 PFAS Incineration Town Hall. The Symposium will offer further community case studies and discussions on how to move from descriptions of the problems with PFAS disposal toward equitable solutions.

Our program will build bottom-up strategies to address complex issues related to water quality, water management, pollution prevention, toxic chemicals, and climate resilience.
