This morning, in spite of multiple bombshell reports on his unethical and questionable actions, the Senate Committee on Environment and Natural Resources voted to advance the nomination of former fossil fuel lobbyist David Bernhardt for Secretary of the Interior.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Yesterday, the House Budget Committee advanced a budget plan which would raise the budget caps on discretionary spending for 2020 and 2021 by 5.7%, or $34 billion. The move is necessary to ward off the regressive sequester cuts that would slash federal support for critical public health, safety, and other programs by over $125 billion.

To welcome Duane Highley, the new CEO of Tri-State Generation and Transmission, to the West, a group representing over 3,300 co-op members and advocates presented him a symbolic welcome basket at Tri-State’s annual meeting at the Omni Interlocken Hotel. Mr. Highley is assuming his new position during a time of dramatic changes in the energy landscape of Tri-State member territories.

RICHMOND, Virginia – Today, the Virginia General Assembly voted down two critical amendments offered by Governor Ralph Northam in the state budget. Amendments 34 and 38 remove language from the budget that targets interstate climate compacts, including the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) and the Transportation Climate Initiative (TCI).

BOISE, ID -- Today, the Boise City Council voted to adopt “Boise’s Energy Future,” a plan to move the city’s electricity to 100 percent renewable sources by 2035. After years of community advocacy, the Sierra Club’s Idaho Chapter and Ready for 100 Action campaign celebrate Boise becoming the first city in Idaho -- and 115th nationwide -- to adopt this goal.

Houston, Texas -- A KMCO chemical plant in Crosby, outside Houston, caught fire today. One plant worker has died, and two others are in critical condition. Reminiscent of the recent #ITCFire, a large black plume of toxic smoke is rising above the facility. KMCO has a long history of environmental and workplace safety issues.

San Juan, Puerto Rico, -- Today, the Senate voted on amendments to a disaster relief bill that provides badly needed relief for flood-impacted states in the Midwest, particularly in Iowa. The Republican-led amendment did not provide adequate funding for continued recovery of Puerto Rico. The amendment was on Senator Shelby’s substitute amendment to HR 268, the Supplemental Appropriations Act, which failed with all Democrats opposed. Democrats voted no on the bill because Puerto Rico has not received the funds promised for recovery.
