Autumn is upon us! As the season shifts towards fall, we’re feeling grateful for all of the great experiences this summer had to offer and looking forward to the work ahead. Read on to find out what we’re up to, and how you can plug in.

Speak up now for our roadless forests

Last Friday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture opened an official rulemaking process to rescind the 2001 Roadless Rule , a widely supported conservation policy that protects nearly 60 million acres of undeveloped national forest lands across the country. In Wyoming, the Roadless Rule safeguards nearly 3 million acres of unroaded forest, providing critical habitat for wildlife, clean water for our communities, and offering a wide range of recreational activities. If that weren’t enough, the rule also saves millions in taxpayer dollars each year by avoiding costly road construction and maintenance.

We can’t afford to lose these protections. The only way to keep the Roadless Rule in place is to speak up now and tell the USDA that we value our wild, roadless forests. Submit your comment by September 19th.

September 7 | Legend Rock State Petroglyphs Hike (Thermopolis-Meeteetse Area) | Register Here

THIS WEEKEND: View and learn about the rich preservation and history of Legend Rock State Petroglyphs. Hike Legend Rocks Interpretive Trail, about a half a mile in, great for all ages! Legend Rock is a 1,312-foot near-vertical cliff with more than 92 petroglyph panels and over 300 petroglyph figures. We'll meet around 2:30 and begin our hike around 3 p.m. Click here to RSVP. Come along on our annual adventure to the Red Desert! This year, we'll visit unforgettable landmarks, including the Killpecker Sand Dunes with views of the iconic Boar's Tusk. We'll meet in Farson at 9 a.m. to begin our journey into the desert. Note that carpool space is limited. While we'll plan on staying on well-traveled dirt roads, know that the area may have some spots that would be difficult for a low-clearance vehicle. Contact trip leader Rob Joyce with questions.

Old Bill's Fun Run

Old Bill’s giving season is underway!

Each year we are fortunate to participate in Old Bill’s Fun Run, a time to embrace community and philanthropy throughout Teton County. This year feels especially urgent as we defend against the Trump administration’s constant barrage of attacks, whether they’re working to sell off our public lands to the highest bidder; roll back clean air protections achieved by the endangerment finding; or remove grizzly bears from the endangered species list.

If you haven’t yet donated, it’s not too late! Give to Sierra Club Wyoming via Old Bill’s to make the greatest impact – donations are matched by Old Bill’s co-challengers through September 12 at 5pm!
Planning to be in Jackson this weekend? Be sure to stop by our booth at Jackson Elementary school on Run Day! We’ll have Sierra Club swag to give away and an interactive activity to share your love for the Bridger-Teton National Forest.

Wind energy is here- Let’s give it a fair shake.

Sierra Club recently joined a group of 25 residents from Laramie and Casper for a tour of the High Plains/McFadden Ridge wind farm in northern Albany County. This eye-opening experience provided an up close encounter with these large turbines and an opportunity to discuss how they’re planned, sited, and operated. Read our most recent blog post highlighting the tour and how Sierra Club is advocating for a clean energy future.

Feedgrounds Decision

Last month, the Bridger-Teton National Forest announced their selected alternative regarding the renewal of feedground permits for Dell Creek and Forest Park. In their decision, the forest opted to renew these permits for three more years in order to align with the permitting timelines of other feedgrounds on the forest, providing for a joint decision on all feedgrounds. This comes after six elk tested positive for CWD on the Dell Creek feedground during the 2024-25 winter season. The decision to delay simply condemns western Wyoming elk to at least three more deadly winters of feeding; who knows how many will succumb to chronic wasting disease in that time. Together with our partners, we’re working to submit an objection to the decision. Stay tuned!
