North Group Outings Chair:

Provides leadership, direction and oversight to group outings program and its outings leaders, working to make outdoor activities an integrated and vital element of the group’s efforts.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Maintaining current Sierra Club membership.
  • Being familiar with the Outings Leader Handbook and all Club policies and procedures pertaining to the Group outings program.
  • Ensuring that Group outings follow Club policies and procedures.
  • Managing and minimizing the risks of Group Outings.
  • Maintaining training and first aid certification requirements for Group Outings Leaders and ensuring all active leaders have met these requirements.
  • Maintaining communication with the Chapter Outings Chair and Outings Volunteer Coordinator.
  • Reviewing and approving all outings within the Group.
  • Coordinating scheduling, planning, and publication requirements of Group Outings.
  • Working with leaders to integrate conservation issues into the outings program whenever possible.
  • Maintaining records as required by the Chapter and national outings program.
  • Recruiting new outings participants and leaders.

Estimated Time Commitment: 10 hours a month.

North Group Webmaster:

Publicize the group’s programs, positions and activities through its website. Update the website regularly and maintain active communication with Group leaders to make sure the website is kept up to date and relevant. Must be willing to learn about website maintenance on the Sierra Club's Drupal platform.

Estimated Time Commitment: 4 hours a month.

North Group Secretary:

The secretary has the overall responsibility of maintaining the records of the Group, and can function best in a close working relationship with the Group Chair, including advising on meeting agendas and assisting with the conduct of executive committee meetings. This includes maintaining a basic familiarity with Robert’s Rules and/or other basic meeting operating procedures.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Minutes: Record meeting minutes in an accurate, understandable manner, reflecting the essence of discussion and capturing any action items. Ideally, a preliminary draft of the minutes of each meeting should be sent to the chair within a week for review and correction. A revised draft should be sent to each executive committee member in advance of the next meeting, and formal approval of the previous meeting’s minutes should be an action item on each meeting’s agenda.
  • RecordsMaintain a permanent file of bylaws, minutes, policy resolutions, chapter or group papers, reports and correspondence, and pass the file on to your successor.

Estimated Time Commitment: : 2 hours a month, plus attendance at Group executive committee meetings.

North Group Conservation Chair:

Provides leadership, direction and guidance to the group on all issues related to conservation.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Identifying local conservation issues needing attention.
  • Providing strategy and vision for conservation advocacy within the group.
  • Recruiting and leading a Group conservation committee.
  • Reporting on conservation committee activities to the Group executive committee.

Estimated Time Commitment: 5 hours a month, plus attendance at Group executive committee meetings once a month.

North Group Outings Leaders:

Turn your love into the outdoors into a chance to lead and inspire others on the trail.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Maintaining current Sierra Club membership.
  • Being familiar with the Outings Leader Handbook and all Club policies and procedures pertaining to the Group outings program.
  • Minimizing risks to participants, including proper participant screening before outings.
  • Conducting outings in a manner consistent with Club policies and ethics.
  • Having the technical, first aid, and leadership experience to conduct outings safely.
  • Maintaining leadership and first aid certifications as required.
  • Integrating conservation, advocacy, and membership recruitment into outings whenever possible.

North Group Political Committee Members:

Serve on a political committee to direct the Group’s influence on public officials and endorsements on political candidates and ballot issues.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Identifying candidates for local public office and local ballot measures relevant to the Sierra Club.
  • Preparing questionnaires and conducting candidate interviews according to the process laid out in the national political Compliance Guidelines.
  • Voting on local endorsements to recommend to the Group executive committee.

Estimated Time Commitment: 1-2 hours a week.

Social Director:

Work with the Group leadership and Group Membership Chair to plan two social events for members and supporters each year. The ideal person for this position will have experience in event planning and enjoy social events.

Marine & Wetlands Chair:

Oversees all Group activity on marine and wetland issues.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Maintaining familiarity with local marine and wetland issues.
  • Communicating regularly with the Group Conservation Chair and with the Group executive committee as needed.
  • Coordinating with other organizations to stand up to threats to clean water and healthy waterways.
  • Providing leadership and direction on all local marine and wetlands issues.

Wilderness Committee Members:

Are you passionate about protecting our public lands and other wild places? Then service on the Group wilderness committee may be a good fit for you.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Maintaining familiarity with local Wilderness issues.
  • Working under the direction of the Group Wilderness Chair to manage response to threats and opportunities as needed.
  • Coordinating with other organizations to organize local action on proposed and potential Wilderness designation.
