What Is Sierra Club Doing For Earth Day In The Lone Star State?

Earth from space

The Sierra Club will host and participate in a number of events on Earth Day/Earth Week this year across the Lone Star state. As part of our effort to welcome more people to explore, enjoy, and protect our environment, we want to create as many opportunities to do so as we can.

Check out multiple events in Austin and Dallas. There are also activities in Houston (here and here), and Fort Worth. Contact one of our other regional groups to see about activities elsewhere in Texas.

These events will be independent of the Earth Day Texas brand events in Dallas and Austin. While Trammell Crow’s branded events are opportunities for many groups to educate the public about issues critical to the environment, the Sierra Club has decided to host and participate in other events that better emphasize the values of equity, inclusion, and justice.

We honor and respect the people and organizations that are committed to fighting for a better environment, and stand with them in creating a culture that is inclusive of everyone. The environmental movement suffers if it marginalizes groups based on immigration status, race, gender, or economic status. The only way to save ourselves and our planet is to help build a broad-based movement for climate justice that includes everyone, and especially safeguards the needs and dreams of communities who have historically been marginalized by the U.S. environmental movement.

We all face a volatile future with Trump in power, but immigrants, the poor, women, and people of color face disproportionately more harm from this White House, Congress, and the Texas Legislature, especially when it comes to dismantling environmental protections. Only together can we build a better, more secure, and sustainable planet.

In this way, we honor the original spirit of Earth Day.
