The 2016 election was a bad one for the environment with the election of Donald Trump. However, at a state and local level the 2016 election was very good. Sierra Club endorsed candidates won at all levels from Senate and Congress to County Supervisor and City Council despite fierce competition and spending by oil companies and developers in many of these races.

In 2014, oil companies spent a record amount in Santa Barbara County to influence elections. First, they attempted unsuccessfully to unseat County Supervisor Janet Wolf in the June primary. Then they spent $7+ million dollars to defeat Measure P –  the most ever spent against a local ballot measure.
