Michigan’s Budget Boosts Clean Energy in 2023 and Beyond

Sierra Club supports Michigan Legislature and Governor’s efforts to drive renewable energy, clean transportation, and energy efficiency forward, opposes money for Palisades plant

Lansing, MI - After much negotiations, the Michigan Legislature was able to pass a FY 24 budget for the state, including several key investments for renewable energy, energy efficiency, expanding access to the outdoors, water quality improvements, and clean transportation. Unfortunately, also included in the budget was $150 million toward re-opening the Palisades Nuclear Plant, which the Sierra Club has actively fought to keep closed.

In response to the budget passing, Tim Minotas, the Sierra Club Michigan Chapter’s Legislative and Political Deputy Director, stated:

“While we are disappointed to see funding for reopening the Palisades nuclear plant, overall, this state budget includes transformative investments worth our praise. From major investments in electric school buses, renewable energy deployment, public transit, expanding outdoor access, and protecting our waterways, this budget reflects the demands of Michigan residents. The message is clear: Michigan is ready to move away from polluting fossil fuels and usher in a new era of leadership building a sustainable economy that benefits all Michigan communities.”
