Michigan Sierra Club joined community leaders, educators and advocates from across northern Michigan for a series of public briefings focused on the rapid expansion of cryptomining and artificial intelligence (AI) data centers and what the expansion could mean for rural communities.
The hybrid briefings were organized by the newly formed Northern Michigan Alliance for Responsible Development and were aimed at informing residents in Michigan’s 1st Congressional District about proposed and emerging projects. Discussions centered on the growing electricity demand associated with cryptomining and large-scale data centers, the potential for higher utility bills, increased strain on water resources and the risk of undermining Michigan’s climate and clean energy goals.
Representing the Sierra Club, our Legislative and Political Director Tim Minotas provided context on how these industries intersect with state policy, utility regulation and climate commitments. Tim emphasized that Michigan’s energy and climate laws were designed to protect communities and keep energy affordable for families, not to absorb the costs of highly energy- and water-intensive industries that provide limited public benefit.
The briefing underscored the importance of strong oversight and clear statewide standards. Without them, local communities can be left dealing with long-term consequences, including higher electricity rates, infrastructure strain and environmental impacts, often after decisions have already been made.
In addition to sharing policy expertise, Sierra Club worked alongside local partners to help equip residents with tools to engage local officials, planners and state lawmakers. The goal was not only to raise concerns, but to empower communities to ask hard questions early, demand transparency and advocate for development that aligns with local values and environmental protection.
As interest in cryptomining and AI data centers continues to grow across Michigan, Sierra Club remains committed to standing with communities to ensure development decisions that put people, affordability and the environment first.
