NJSC Endorsed Candidates Win Primaries- Greener Day for NJ

All of New Jersey Sierra Club endorsements have won the New Jersey Democratic Primary for Senate and Congressional Seats. The New Jersey Sierra Club congratulates the following endorsed candidates: 

∙        U.S. Senate: Cory Booker (D)

∙        House, District 1: Donald Norcross (D)

∙        House, District 3: Andy Kim (D)

∙        House, District 5: Josh Gottheimer (D)

∙        House, District 6: Frank Pallone Jr. (D)

∙        House, District 7: Tom Malinowski (D)

∙        House, District 8: Albio Sires (D)

∙        House, District 9: William Pascrell (D)

∙        House, District 10: Donald Payne, Jr. (D)

∙        House, District 11: Mikie Sherrill (D)

∙        House, District 12: Bonnie Watson Coleman (D)

“We congratulate Senator Booker and our endorsed Congressional leaders for their victory in this year’s primary race. We believe they will stand up for the environment in their district and across the country. We are confident that these are the best candidates who will put the best interests of the public first. This congressional delegation will continue to collectively be able to protect and preserve our environment and our public health on a state and national level. They will stand up to President Trump and fight his rollbacks on climate change,” said Jeff Tittel, Director of the New Jersey Sierra Club. “We also commend the democratic candidates who ran. They raised important issues on the environment and climate change that should be listened to by the incumbents who won Today is a greener day for New Jersey and our nation, but we still have November to work towards.” 

Senator Booker won against Lawrence Hamm with 89% of the vote. Booker will now face Hirsh Singh in the November election. 

“Senator Booker has shown strong leadership and a real commitment to the environment as U.S Senate. We congratulate him on his win for the Democratic seat for the NJ Primary. He is one of our most important advocates for the environment in the Senate. He is dedicated to upholding protections for clean air and clean water, and holding polluters accountable,” said Tittel. “Now the battle begins to beat Hirsh Singh in the November election.” 

Congressman Donald Norcross and Congressman Andy Kim both won an uncontested race for District 1 and District 3. 

“As Congressman, Andy Kim has worked to clean up his district’s toxic sites and water contamination problems. He is a fighter in Congress who has stood up to Donald Trump’s attack on our clean air, clean water, our oceans, and our beaches,” said Tittel. “Congressman Norcross has continued to work hard to protect our public lands, clean air and clean water. He is also a leader in wind, solar, and energy efficiency.”

Congressman Gottheimer won the Democratic seat for District 5, he will now face Frank Pallotta in November.

These democratic candidates have a proven track record of supporting legislation to protect our natural resources, cleaning up toxic sites and Superfund sites, and fighting climate change. We endorsed Congressman Gottheimer because he will fight and reform pipeline applications to protect public land that belongs to all of us. We are confident that he will move our state and nation forward when it comes to protecting the people over polluters,” said Tittel. 

Congressman Tom Malinowski won an uncontested race in District 7, he will now face Thomas Kean, Jr. in November. 

“We support Congressman Malinowski because he has the principles to stand up for what is right. He has joined the fight against the PennEast pipeline that would destroy farmland, wetlands, critical streams and more in his district. He supports policies that not only preserve and protect the environment but promote racial, economic, social, and environmental justice,” said Tittel.

Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. has won the Democratic seat for District 6 with a vote of 85%. 

“For or more than 20 years, Congressman Pallone has been a champion on the issues that matter most to the people of New Jersey and has stood up for the protection of our natural resources. With his reelection and as Chair of the House Commerce and Energy Committee, we can get a lot done for the environment,” said Tittel. 

Congressman Albio Sires won the Democratic seat in District 8 with 75.9% of the vote and will face Jason Mushnick in November. Congressman Bill Pascrell won the Democratic seat for District 9 with 83% of the vote, he will face the Republican winner, Bill Prempeh in November. 

“Since he was first elected, Congressman Pascrell has proven to be an environmental champion. We are glad to see him victorious in this year’s primary. He has been a leading voice for cleaning up toxic sites and Superfund Sites and standing up to Trump’s rollbacks on the environment. We look forward to continue working with him to get elected in November,” said Tittel. “Albio Sires has been a consistent and solid supporter of environmental protections for clean air, clean water, and open space. He has also worked to support renewable energy, green jobs, and energy efficiency. We congratulate Congressman Sires’s win.”  

Congressman Donald Payne Jr. won the Democratic seat for District 10 with 90% of the vote. Congresswoman Mikie Sherril won an uncontested race for District 11 and Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman won the democratic seat for District 12 with 90% of the vote. 

“We congratulate Mikie Sherrill for winning the Democratic Primary for the 11th District. As a Congresswoman, she has stood up for the environment in her district and across the country. We are confident that she is the best candidate who will clean up and protect her district,” said Tittel. “We are proud to see Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman win the Democratic primary for the 12th District. She has an impeccable voting record when it comes to protecting the environment and we look forward to helping her win November election.” 

The Sierra Club is not only the nation's oldest and largest environmental group, but one of the most influential when it comes to making political endorsements. The NJ Sierra Club has close to 22,000 members and 70,000 supporters in New Jersey and 3.4 million members nationwide.
