Sierra Club Celebrates Awards of Third Round of Offshore Wind Solicitations

Trenton, NJ – Today, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) announced the winners of the third solicitation for offshore wind projects in New Jersey. Selected new developers include Leading Light Wind, a joint venture between Invenergy and energyRE which will bring 2400 MW of power to 1 million homes. Light Wind is the first American project to be awarded an offshore wind bid, and includes an energy equity program aimed to reduce costs to ratepayers. The second project will be developed by Attentive Energy LLC and total 1342 MW. Combined these two projects will bring 3,742 additional MW of offshore wind to New Jersey’s Grid, and power 1.8 million homes.

This moves New Jersey one step further towards Governor Murphy’s goal of 11 megawatts of offshore wind power by 2040 and achieving one hundred percent clean energy by 2035.

Anjuli Ramos-Busot, New Jersey Sierra Club Director made the following statement;

“Today marks a historic milestone for New Jersey’s just transition to clean energy and in advancing our offshore wind goals as this is the largest award the BPU has ever made for offshore wind in New Jersey. The projects in this third solicitation signify that offshore wind development is and will continue to advance in our state.

“The Sierra Club thanks Governor Murphy, his administration, and the BPU for their continued support to advance responsible wind development in New Jersey and take the necessary action to address the climate crisis. The New Jersey Chapter is excited at the prospect of more turbines on New Jersey’s horizon and look forward to a safer climate future because of it.”

Denise Brush, New Jersey Sierra Club Offshore Wind Committee Chair shared, "I am delighted that the state is moving forward quickly with the awards for the third offshore wind solicitation despite recent setbacks. It is so important to not get discouraged and to stay the course on Governor Murphy's renewable energy goals."
