Keyport Stands Up to NESE, Passes Resolution in Opposition
Keyport, NJ - Last night, Keyport Councilmembers unanimously voted on a resolution to oppose Williams Transco’s dangerous Northeast Supply Enhancement Project (NESE). Additional bayshore towns, Franklin and Aberdeen, have also passed resolutions opposing the project.
The NESE project includes a proposed compressor station in Franklin Township and 3.5 new miles of connecting natural gas pipeline through Old Bridge and Sayreville, which would run 24 miles into the Raritan Bay to Long Island, New York.
NJ Sierra Club Conservation Program Manager, Taylor McFarland and Greg Remaud, CEO of NJ/NY Baykeeper, presented the impacts of the NESE project to Mayor Araneo and council members.
Taylor McFarland, NJ Sierra Club Conservation Program Manager, issued the following statement:
“Williams Transco’s fossil fuel project would be disastrous to the local community, environment, and economy in Keyport. New Jersey will not be receiving any of the gas produced by this project; New York will. Instead, we will be left with a compressor station and pipeline, along with all the associated impacts. The construction of a new pipeline will cause irreparable damage to critical wetlands that help mitigate flooding, and it will also dredge up contaminated materials already present in the Raritan Bay. This proposal will have no benefit for Keyport. Unfortunately, it will set the town back in all the progress it has made in revitalizing the waterfront and ensuring the bay is safe for everyone. We thank Mayor Araneo and councilmembers for protecting our environment and public safety by saying no to NESE!”
