Sierra Club Applauds Sherrill Administration's Day 1 Actions on Energy Affordability

Executive Orders Focused on Rate Payer Relief and Boosting Generation

Trenton, NJ - Today, on first day as New Jersey's governor, Mikie Sherrill delivered on her promise of Day 1 action to freeze utility costs and provide ratepayer relief with two energy affordability executive orders.

The first executive order uses state authority and funds to offset increases due to the regional grid operator PJM’s mismanagement and hold utilities accountable for keeping rates from continuing to climb at an unsustainable rate. It also empowers the Board of Public Utilities (BPU) to pause or change utility actions that would increase rates for families.

Sherrill’s second executive order declares a state of emergency on utility costs under the Disaster Control Act, creating and expanding state programs to increase power generation in New Jersey, including initiating and accelerating programs to bring on thousands of megawatts of new solar and battery storage generation.

Anjuli Ramos-Busot, NJ Sierra Club Director, issued the following statement;

“The New Jersey Sierra Club applauds Governor Sherrill’s immediate action on day one to deliver on her campaign promise to make energy more affordable for families across the state. Her two executive orders will freeze electric rates and put more clean, cheap energy generation on the ground.

We congratulate Mikie Sherrill as the 57th Governor of New Jersey and we look forward to working with her administration to make her vision a reality while protecting communities and the environment.”
