Plug-in Solar Bill Becomes Law in NJ, Expanding Access to Affordable, Clean Energy for All
Trenton, NJ — Today at the New Jersey Statehouse, Governor Sherrill signed the The Garden State Plug-In Solar Act, S2368 (Mckeon)/A4836 (Calabrese), historic legislation to expand access to affordable “plug-in” solar systems. This bill removes past restrictions that blocked plug-in solar, which fits on small spaces like balconies, patios or porches.
This law gives households a way to save on electric bills and expands access to clean energy for renters and apartment-dwellers.
In response, David Einsenhauer, Energy Policy and Legislative Director, issued the following statement:
“The Sierra Club celebrates the enactment of The Garden State Plug-In Solar Act today by Governor Sherrill.
This law makes solar more accessible and affordable for more New Jerseyans by granting the potential to give every household – regardless of whether they rent their home or have a suitable rooftop – a simple, affordable way to lower their energy bills through plug-in solar and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Access to clean energy should never depend on your zip code or your ability to buy or own a home.
This law will also help to address data center-driven strain on our energy grid by enabling more consumers to generate more clean power for their surrounding community.
We thank Governor Sherrill and legislative champions, Senator McKeon and Assemblyman Calabrese for their work to expand access to clean energy in New Jersey.”
