WASHINGTON, D.C. - While officials across the country continue to tally vote counts, the presidential election remains too close to call.
The Sierra Club Independent Action and Sierra Club Political Committee actively mobilized the grassroots movement that has swept the country since the 2016 election, running their largest programs ever this cycle. Nearly 35,000 Sierra Club volunteers helped to contact millions of voters in battleground presidential states and House, Senate, and state races across the country. In total, these volunteers made more than 5 million phone calls, handwrote more than 1.28 million letters, and sent more than 20 million text messages to voters. Additionally, Sierra Club staff and volunteers participated in over 800 events nationwide through the Victory Corps program.
In Response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune Released the Following Statement:
“Like everything in 2020, this election is unprecedented. This election’s overwhelming voter turnout demonstrates that together, we can restore the promise of our democracy. In spite of the threats of the climate crisis, the ongoing pandemic and economic disaster, voters believe deeply in the power of our democracy and are committed to fighting for a just, sustainable and equitable future.
“That is why it is more important than ever to say loud and clear that every vote must be counted because every single one of us counts. Millions of us turned out despite unprecedented voter intimidation and suppression tactics and our voices deserve to be heard.
“Even as votes for the Presidency and other races are still being counted, here’s what we do know: The challenges we face in our communities -- from the climate crisis to inhumane systematic racism to the horrors of COVID-19 -- won’t be solved by the outcome of any one election. We must continue to mobilize, to organize and to win dramatic progress for our air, water, climate and environmental justice no matter the outcome. The movement to protect our health and the health of our communities is growing. When we fight, we win.”
