Washington, DC — Esta semana se difundieron imágenes de agentes de la Patrulla de Aduanas y Fronteras abusando físicamente de familias haitianas a orillas del Río Grande en la frontera con México.
Actualmente hay más de 15.000 inmigrantes retenidos para ser procesados en un campamento provisional bajo el Puente Internacional Del Río, donde se les fuerza a aguantar un calor extenuante sin acceso a agua corriente y limpia. A muchos de estos inmigrantes —quienes están escapando de crisis políticas y económicas, y los impactos acumulados de desastres naturales— se les está deportando o expulsando de Estados Unidos sin permitírseles solicitar asilo, un derecho reconocido por leyes internacionales y federales.
Como respuesta, el presidente del Sierra Club, Ramón Cruz, emitió la siguiente declaración:
“La justicia racial es justicia climática. Mientras que el racismo sistémico continúa aterrorizando a personas negras y latinas, los mismos sistemas de opresión apoyan activamente la explotación sin freno de los recursos y la degradación de nuestra humanidad común. Los actos de la Patrulla Fronteriza, con claros ecos esclavistas, son evidencia de que se ha permitido que el racismo contra los negros se haya asentado en el sistema de inmigración por demasiado tiempo.
“No podemos quedarnos callados frente a este abuso y rechazo del proceso legal que confrontan refugiados de la pobreza, inestabilidad y desastres naturales. El Sierra Club está comprometido a luchar por un clima saludable basado en justicia ambiental, racial, económica y de género. Nos unimos a nuestros aliados en exigir a la administración Biden que mantenga sus promesas de hacer el sistema inmigratorio más justo y humano. Le urgimos también a que exija responsabilidades a la Patrulla Fronteriza por su conducta abusiva y a que ofrezca a los haitianos seguridad y refugio, no deportaciones y expulsiones”.

Sierra Club Calls on Biden Administration to End the Humanitarian Crisis at the Border
Washington, D.C. - This week, images were released of Customs and Border Patrol agents physically abusing Haitian families on the banks of the Rio Grande at the Southern border.
Currently, there are more than 15,000 migrants being held for processing in a makeshift camp under the Del Rio International Bridge, where they are being forced to endure sweltering heat with no access to clean, running water. Many of these migrants, who are fleeing political and economic crises and the cumulative impacts of natural disasters, are being deported or expelled from the US without being allowed to claim asylum. Seeking asylum is a legal right that is recognized in both international and US federal law.
In response, Sierra Club President Ramón Cruz released the following statement:
“Racial justice is climate justice. While systemic racism continues to terrorize Black and Brown people, the same systems of oppression are actively endorsing unfettered extraction and degrading our shared humanity. The Border Patrol’s actions, with their clear echoes of slavery, are evidence that racism and anti-Blackness have been allowed to fester within our immigration system for far too long.
“We cannot be silent in the face of the abuse and denial of due process faced by refugees fleeing from poverty, instability, and natural disasters. The Sierra Club is committed to fighting for a healthy climate built on a foundation of environmental, racial, economic, and gender justice. We join our allies to demand that the Biden administration keep its promises to make our immigration system fairer and more humane. We are calling on them to hold the Border Patrol accountable for its abusive conduct, and offer Haitians safety and refuge, not deportations and expulsions.”
