Washington, D.C. - Today, a new study by Ember reported that for the first time in history, fossil fuels produced less than half of the U.S. total energy generation for a month. In March, fossil fuels made up just 49.2 percent of the grid, while carbon-free energy contributed the majority 50.8 percent.
In response, Sierra Club Beyond Coal Campaign Director Laurie Williams issued the following statement:
“Despite the Trump Administration’s desperate attempts to bolster polluting and expensive coal, the numbers don’t lie. Clean, abundant American renewable energy is cheaper, faster to get online, and more reliable, and it is steadily overtaking fossil fuels in electric generation. We are seeing increased clean energy generation across the country because of the simple fact that it is a vastly more cost effective source of power.
“It’s clear that progress like this is why Donald Trump is so recklessly and illegally trying to throw fossil fuels a lifeline, but it’s time for him to get his head out of the sand and recognize that the path to energy dominance is homegrown clean energy, not polluting fossil fuels.”
