WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, the House of Representatives -- led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Eliot Engel, Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Frank Pallone and Select Committee Chair Kathy Castor -- passed H.R. 9, the Climate Action Now Act. This is the first piece of climate legislation the House has passed in nearly 10 years, and the bill passed with bipartisan support.

Tomorrow, the U.S. House of Representatives -- led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Select Committee Chair Kathy Castor --will vote on the first piece of major climate legislation in nearly 10 years. The bill, H.R. 9 or the Climate Action Now Act, will reaffirm the United States’ commitment to the landmark Paris Agreement by prohibiting the Trump administration from spending any money on withdrawing from the Paris Agreement and requiring the administration to produce a plan for meeting our international commitments.

KATOWICE, POLAND -- Today, the 24th annual UN Climate Negotiations (COP24) concluded. During the talks, countries met to hash out the details of the Paris Agreement rulebook, which will provide guidance for the implementation of the landmark climate deal.

Katowice, Poland -- Over the weekend, the Trump administration joined with Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait to vote against accepting the findings of the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report during the COP24 UN Climate Negotiations. The report projects that the catastrophic effects of the climate crisis could include food shortages and droughts by 2040. The United States refused to “welcome” the scientific findings, claiming that including that language would constitute endorsing the report.

For the second year in a row, the United States has chosen to ignore climate science and will host a coal-focused side event at the annual UN climate negotiations. This is despite hosting a similar event at last year’s negotiations to a disastrous end. The Administration’s continued peddling of outdated fossil fuels follows Trump announcing his plan to withdraw from the Paris Agreement in July 2017 and to date, Trump is still the only world leader to announce his rejection of the landmark climate deal. Yet, Despite the Trump administration’s rhetoric and deregulatory agenda, the era of coal has unquestionably ended in the United States.

WASHINGTON, D.C. --Today, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) released its annual emissions gap report, detailing how the world’s countries are not doing enough to curb carbon emissions. According to the report, global emissions continued to rise in 2017, and it is unlikely that they will peak by 2020, despite the critical need to reduce emissions in order to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement and keep global temperature rise well below 2 degrees Celsius.

QUEBEC, CANADA -- Today, the annual G-7 summit concluded with a G-6 communiqué that excludes the U.S. after Trump decided to remove the U.S. at the last minute. Earlier in the day, Trump notably excluded the U.S. from the G-6 commitment to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. Donald Trump continues to isolate the U.S. on a number of issues, including trade and the need to address the climate crisis.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- One year ago today, Donald Trump announced that he intends to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement. The Agreement, which entered into force on November 4, 2016, has been signed by every nation on earth. The earliest the U.S. will be able to complete the withdrawal is November 4, 2020, one day after the next U.S. Presidential election. Since Trump made his announcement, natural disasters have cost the U.S. $296 billion in damages.
