Take Action – Help Shape the Future of our Northwest Forests
The Pacific Northwest is home to some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the world, from ancient old-growth forests to wild salmon-filled rivers. These ecosystems support incredible biodiversity and provide millions with clean water, cultural significance, and recreation opportunities.
Our National Forests must be managed “for the greatest good, for the greatest number, in the longest run”.
Gifford Pinchot, the first chief of the U.S. Forest Service
The Northwest Forest Plan, enacted in 1994, was a groundbreaking effort to manage our National Forests based on science. It ensured the survival of species like the spotted owl and marbled murrelet while preserving critical carbon-storing forests. But now, the U.S. Forest Service is proposing changes that threaten to undermine the Plan’s original vision.
Why This Matters
For over 30 years, the Northwest Forest Plan has provided a science-based framework to protect and restore our forests. Now, as the Forest Service seeks to amend it, we must ensure that these changes strengthen—not weaken—protections for old-growth forests, climate resilience, and wildlife.
The proposed amendment could allow more commercial and salvage logging, endangering fragile ecosystems that are already under pressure from climate change. Instead of dismantling the Plan’s protections, we need amendments that:
- Incorporate Indigenous knowledge and perspectives that were left out of the original process.
- Recognize the role of old-growth forests in carbon storage and climate mitigation.
- Ensure that land managers follow the best available science to address wildfire risks responsibly.
