Saturday night was an evening I’ll never forget. As I stepped into the Alamo Cafe in San Antonio, I felt a buzz of excitement and camaraderie in the air - a gathering of like-minded individuals, all united in our shared commitment to protecting Texas’ environment.
I also smelt their famous house-made tortillas (of which I ate more than my fair share).
It was my first time attending the Sierra Club Lone Star Chapter’s Environmental Awards ceremony, and to say I was moved would be an understatement. Amid the political turbulence that seems to touch every corner of our lives - the fear, the uncertainty - Saturday night was a much-needed reminder of the power of hope, resilience, and community.

Honoring Legacies of Leadership

One of the most touching moments of the evening was honoring Hector Gonzalez. Listening to the stories of his
decades-long dedication to the Sierra Club was humbling. Hector’s steady hand has guided the organization through countless challenges, and his powerful leadership has left an indelible mark. Watching him accept his award, surrounded by a room full of people inspired by his legacy, was profoundly moving.
Senator José Menendez was also celebrated as this year’s Legislative Champion. His speech was a stirring reminder to us all to leave our planet “better than we found it.” Senator Menendez’s words reminded us that even in the face of daunting obstacles, progress is possible when leaders are held accountable by the people they serve to put the well-being of Texans above special interests, and communities come together for change.
Celebrating Texas’ Environmental Champions
The evening also shone a spotlight on individuals whose tireless efforts have shaped the fight for a better future. From Gaige Davila, whose reporting has brought environmental and social issues into sharper focus, to Stephanie Chavez Noell, whose creativity and art uplifts and inspires communities, each honoree’s story was a testament to the transformative power of passion and purpose.

As each award was presented, I couldn’t help but feel inspired by the diversity of ways people are working toward the same goal. Whether through art, journalism, science, or grassroots activism, these honorees are creating ripples of change that will be felt for generations to come.
A Night to Remember
What stood out most to me was the sense of connection in the room. In a world that often feels so divided, Saturday night reminded me of the strength we find in coming together. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the scale of the challenges we face, but hearing the stories of Texas’ environmental champions renewed my faith in what we can accomplish when we work as one.
The awards ceremony wasn’t just a celebration - it was a call to action. It was a reminder that every contribution, no matter the size, matters in the fight to protect our planet. As I left the event, I felt inspired to carry the energy of the evening forward, to do my part in honoring the legacy of those who came before me, supporting those who continue to lead the charge, and forging a path for future environmentalists - for my children and theirs - to continue the work.
If you ever find yourself doubting the impact of your actions, look to nights like these - nights filled with hope, gratitude, and the unshakable belief that together, we can create a future Texas deserves.
