Sierra Club Releases 2025 Texas Legislative Scorecard Highlighting Environmental Votes Across the State

TEXAS - December 17 - The Sierra Club Lone Star Chapter just released its 2025 Texas Legislative Scorecard, a detailed review of how members of the 89th Texas Legislature voted on key environmental issues, including clean energy, water protection, and community resilience.

The scorecard evaluates legislators’ votes and actions on priority issues, offering Texans a clear look at who worked to protect the environment - and who sided with polluters and special interests.

“Texans deserve transparency, and we kept receipts,” said Matt Johnson, Chapter Deputy Director. “Our scorecard helps people see how decisions made at the Capitol affect their everyday lives - from the air we breathe to the reliability of our electric grid. Did your State Representative and Senator have the guts to stand up to corporate polluters? Did they use their power to advance pro-environment, pro-people bills, or did they use it to block them? Our scorecard seeks to answer those questions.”

Over the 140-day legislative session, the Chapter tracked key bills related to water, energy, air quality, and natural resources. Each legislator’s score reflects their record on measures that strengthen environmental protections and build healthier communities. The scorecard also highlights critical missed opportunities and harmful proposals that threaten Texas’ air, water, and energy future.

Key pieces of legislation, including those that gave corporations more freedom to pollute our waterways, handed the nuclear power industry even more taxpayer subsidies, and would have placed more bureaucratic restrictions on renewable energy, heavily affected legislators’ scores because they clearly indicated whether they acted in the best interests of their constituents or of special interests.

The Sierra Club stressed that their scorecard was more than a look back at 2025.

“This scorecard isn’t just about what happened during the session - it’s about what happens next. Accountability is essential if we want to see any positive change, and the work for the next legislative session starts now,” continued Johnson. “We’ll continue collaborating with Texans during the interim to make sure legislators know their constituents are paying attention. It’s time to prioritize the needs of our communities over corporate donors and special interest groups.”
