April 2026: Sherrill Administration scales back NJ's State Agreement Approach (SAA), a transmission-first model built to deliver offshore wind to the grid at the lowest possible cost to ratepayers (Coalition Statement).
April 2026: Bluepoint Wind, a proposed 2.4-gigawatt offshore wind project off the coasts of NJ and NY, is halted as developers agreed to terminate their offshore wind leases in exchange for a federal reimbursement payout.
March 2026: The Trump Administration spends $1 billion in taxpayer dollars to cancel TotalEnergies offshore wind projects in North Carolina and the NY/NJ bight, cancelling the Attentive Energy Two project (TotalEnergies, Rise Light, Power and Corio) that could have powered 650,000 homes in New Jersey.
January 2026: Trump’s order was again overturned by a federal judge, allowing construction to continue.
December 22, 2025: The Trump Administration escalated its attacks again by pausing leases for all five offshore wind projects currently under construction, including Empire Wind 1 and Sunrise Wind in New York.
October 29, 2025: Shell New Energies formally withdraws from the Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind joint venture, transferring 50% stakes to partner EDF and halting the project.
August 2025: “the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities terminated the offshore renewable energy certificate (OREC) order initially granted in 2021 for the 1.5-gigawatt Atlantic Shores Project 1. That decision effectively ended the project’s eligibility for state-level incentives, significantly impacting its commercial outlook.”
July 4, 2025: President Trump signed the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill” into law, ending federal tax credits for wind and solar projects that are not under construction by July 4, 2026, and not placed in service by December 31, 2027. This accelerated the rollback of clean energy incentives established under the Inflation Reduction Act.
May 2025: New Jersey joined a coalition of states to sue the Trump Administration to ensure projects continue.
February 3 2025: BPU announced that they will not proceed with an award in New Jersey’s 4th offshore wind solicitation. There were three bidders in this solicitation, including a rebid and final offer from Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind LLC to continue with their development with prices adjusted to account for inflation and supply chain issues. Without their fourth solicitation award, Atlantic Shores is unable to continue the development of their projects (NJ Sierra Club press release).

May, 2024: The Economic Development Authority completed construction of a Wind Port in Salem County in anticipation of this major new industry taking off in the state.
January 24, 2024: BPU approved Solicitation 3 awards, announced to Attentive Energy and Leading Light (NJ Sierra Club press release).
January 8, 2024: Draft BOEM Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement for NY/NJ Bight Area: published, focusing on cumulative impacts to NY Bight and provides a baseline for individual projects.
October 31, 2023: Ørsted announced that it would cease development on its two New Jersey wind projects, Ocean Wind 1 and 2, saying they were no longer financially viable (NJ Sierra Club press release).
