The Power in Nature coalition, a statewide coalition of conservation advocates, equity groups, Tribally-led organizations, scientists, and land trusts, expressed their support and appreciation today for CNRA’s 30x30 goals to protect biodiversity, advance climate action, and expand equitable access. California has eight years to protect six million acres of land and half a million acres of coastal waters, a formidable goal that will require serious investments in conservation, a strong accountability structure, and long-term funding to build the capacity of Tribes, land trusts, and community-based organizations who are at the forefront of protecting California’s nature.

The order, which was detailed in a speech celebrating Earth Day, launches a process to define and inventory old and mature forests on federal lands, so that policies are enacted to conserve them, and initiates a nature-based solution assessment to understand nature capital and ecosystems to help in the preservation and conservation of natural places.

The event celebrates national parks and historical sites and encourages everyone to get outdoors and explore the history, culture, and landscapes of these lands and waters. Many national parks are increasingly threatened by the effects of climate change, including the shrinking of glaciers and snowpacks, warming temperatures that displace native wildlife, and increases in the populations of invasive species. These trends demonstrate why we must protect more lands and waters to address the climate crisis and increase access to the outdoors.

Today, the Recovering America's Wildlife Act (RAWA) passed out of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee with a 15-5 vote. This historic bipartisan bill would invest nearly $1.4 billion for states, territories, and Tribes to amplify their work in recovering, conserving, and protecting at-risk wildlife and habitat.
