On March 24, over 60 Texans gathered at the State Capitol for Sierra Club’s Texas Advocacy Day, a landmark event in grassroots environmental activism. Participants met with legislators, shared their concerns about pressing environmental issues, and pushed for stronger policies to protect Texas’ air, water, and clean energy future.
The event brought together environmental leaders, policy experts, community advocates, and a solid showing of Texans brand new to civic engagement helping to amplify the call for immediate legislative action. Attendees engaged in advocacy training, one-on-one meetings with legislators, and powerful discussions on the future of Texas’ environmental policies.
“The reason I’m here today is because I’ve been a Texan for 67 years,” said Debbie Beyea, a first-time Sierra Club Texas Advocacy Day participant, and lifetime advocate. “I love Texas. This is a wonderful opportunity to be here with the Sierra Club…and advocate for a safer, cleaner, healthier Texas for…our families.”
What’s Next for the Texas Sierra Club
Advocacy Day was not just a one-day event - it was a catalyst for sustained advocacy throughout the legislative session. Sierra Club and its partners will continue this work throughout the session. Sierra Club and its partners will continue working with lawmakers, urging them to pass policies that prioritize the environment and public health.
"Texans care deeply about our water, affordable and reliable clean energy, and making sure legislators hear the concerns of everyday people. This is just the beginning. The energy and commitment we saw this week shows that the people won't have our voices drowned out by a chorus of well paid lobbyists and special interests,” said Dave Cortez, director of the Lone Star Chapter.
Right now, we need your help pushing legislators to support these bills:
YES on SB 1915/HB 4374: Strong energy efficiency goal
NO on SB 388, SB 819/HB 553: Anti-renewable energy
YES on HB 3873: Salinity standards
YES on HJR 7: Smart water infrastructure funding
