How Your Voice Can Shape Texas’ Environmental Future

Your participation can influence state legislators to prioritize responsible, sustainable policies that put people & the environment first. Grassroots activism plays a crucial role in ensuring that decision-makers listen to the people, not just powerful industries. This is our home, and we have a responsibility to protect it for future generations. Every conversation, every letter, and every meeting moves us closer to the Texas we all believe in and deserve.

The Power of Grassroots Activism in Environmental Policy

One of the most effective ways to create change is by engaging directly with your state legislators. Meeting face-to-face with state legislators and their staff ensures environmental issues remain a priority. Whether you’re advocating for affordable, reliable, clean energy, stronger water protections, or opposing fossil fuel expansion, your voice matters in shaping Texas’ future.

Why Community Engagement Matters

Collaborating with local organizations and like-minded individuals strengthens the movement. Advocacy isn’t just about one event - it’s about building long-term partnerships that lead to meaningful change. This is our moment.

Can’t make it to in-person on Texas Advocacy Day? No problem. We’ll be fighting for change all session, and there are many ways to get involved. Here are just a few, and we’re available to support - reach out any time at lonestar.chapter@sierraclub.org.

Can’t Make it to Austin? Visit Your Legislators In-District

Benefits of an in-district visit:

  • Personal meetings leave a lasting impression and help build relationships
  • Legislators are more accessible outside of the busy legislative session
  • Bringing a group of neighbors or local advocates can show broad support for an issue

Meeting with your legislators in their home district is one of the most powerful ways to advocate for change. Legislators hold regular office hours in their district offices when they’re not at the Capitol, making it easier for constituents to engage with them directly. Email lonestar.chapter@sierraclub.org if you'd like us to help you coordinate an in-district visit with other constituents in your area!

Call Your State Legislators

Benefits of making a phone call:

  • Direct and immediate impact
  • Office staff track call topics and report concerns to the legislator
  • Personal calls show strong constituent engagement

Calling your state representative or senator is a quick and simple way to get their attention, especially for urgent issues like upcoming votes. Lawmakers keep track of constituent calls, and a high volume of calls on a specific issue can influence their decisions. Learn more about contacting your state legislator here.

Send An Email or Letter

Benefits of email and letter writing:

  • Provides detailed reasons for your opinion and supporting information
  • Allows legislators to respond thoughtfully
  • Easy to adapt and send to multiple people or offices

Emails and letters allow you to provide detailed information about your concerns while making a personal connection with lawmakers. Well-written messages with specific requests and personal stories are more likely to get attention. Learn more.
