Piedmont Ridge Day Hike with Wild DFW author Amy Martin, Saturday, November 9, 2024
Dallas Sierra Club is teaming with Amy Martin, Master Naturalist and author of Wild DFW to present a day hike at Piedmont Ridge. The ridge is a finger of the Austin Chalk escarpment that runs north-south between Jim Miller Road and the DART green line, Scyene Road and Lake June Road. Parts of the ridge are within three City of Dallas parks—Gateway, Grover Keeton, and Devon Anderson. On the ridge are overlooks facing west to the Dallas skyline, the Great Trinity Forest, and the broadcast towers at Cedar Hill, almost twenty miles distant.
We’ll hike five to six miles on segments of the Scyene Overlook, J. J. Beeman, and Piedmont Ridge Trails. Points of interest will include at least three overlooks, a surreal DART crossing in the woods, an off-trail beaver pond, a ridgetop slice of the Blackland Prairie, the Comanche Storytelling Place, and possibly the oldest tree in Dallas.
This hike is one in a series of hikes with Amy Martin that we hope will help metropolitan Dallas embrace its nature with pride, spurring more trails and greater land preservation.
Where: 2725 N Jim Miller Road, Dallas 75217 (softball field parking lot).
When: Saturday, November 9, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm.
