SAMPLE LETTER TO CITY COUNCIL from Individual living in Norfolk:
Dear Mayor Alexander, City Council Members: (add your city council).
I support Norfolk’s initiative to transition to energy-efficient LED street lighting, appreciating its potential to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. However, I would like a holistic approach to this conversion that prioritizes public health, wildlife preservation, and environmental integrity. Specifically, I support the adoption of LED fixtures with a Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) of 2700K or lower, for wetland areas and historic cities as endorsed by experts such as the Virginia Department of Transportation, DarkSky International, and the American Medical Association. These warmer-spectrum lights minimize the disruption to the circadian rhythm for all living creatures, including nocturnal wildlife that are greatly impacted by artificial lights at night.
We encourage the city of Norfolk to hire qualified lighting experts with experience in creating LED conversion design plans, ensuring that Norfolk’s LED streetlight conversion aligns with best practices for health and environmental stewardship. This approach will not only enhance public safety and energy efficiency but also preserve the natural behaviors of local wildlife and maintain the quality of our night skies for generations to come.
Respectfully,
