About Us

Our Mission

The Mission of the Sierra Club is to explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth; to practice and promote the responsible use of the earth's ecosystems and resources; to educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment; and to use all lawful means to carry out those objectives.

Your Wisconsin Sierra Club

The Wisconsin Chapter is the Wisconsin branch of the Sierra Club, and includes over 18,000 members and supporters located throughout the state.  Our chapter was founded in 1963 by Norm O’Neill of Milwaukee.  The Wisconsin Chapter has an Executive Committee of 15 elected and appointed volunteer leaders; six local groups; 3 specialty sections; and five paid staff in our office in Madison.

Our Conservation Priorities

Beyond Coal to Clean Energy Beyond Oil Clean Transportation

Protecting Forests and Public Lands Blocking Destructive Mining Protecting Water

We accomplish our goals through direct and grassroots legislative and administrative lobbying, education, outings, litigation, and electing environmental champions to local, state, and federal office.

Volunteers and Victories

Our volunteers make the Sierra Club the powerful, grassroots organization that it is. Thanks to volunteers like you, we have achieved many victories including:

    • Preventing Perrier from bottling Wisconsin’s water in 2000
    • Stopping the Crandon sulfide mine in 2003
    • Halting the Penokee taconite mine in 2013
    • Leading the way off of coal and onto clean energy by closing coal plants and advocating for clean energy
