Sierra Club Urges Passage of Wolf Management Plan

MADISON- Ahead of the Natural Resources Board (NRB) meeting on Wednesday, the Sierra Club urges NRB members to support the proposed Wolf Management Plan. The vote will be the final step before the plan is implemented. This last stage comes after years of stakeholder meetings and public input opportunities. Thousands of comments were received on the plan, hundreds of which showed support for aspects of the plan, including adaptive management.

Elizabeth Ward, Sierra Club Wisconsin Chapter Director stated:

“While we remain opposed to Act 169, the law that requires a wolf hunt regardless of science and tribal input. We are committed to ensuring the egregious wolf hunt we saw in 2021 doesn’t happen again. This plan is a good first step to restoring sustainable management of wolves in Wisconsin.

“We hope to see the Natural Resources Board members pass the wolf management plan. The plan demonstrates a commitment to science, tribal authority, and public opinion. We commend the Department of Natural Resources for recognizing the ecological and cultural benefits of wolves and remaining committed to adaptive wolf management and low-quota zones. We’d like to see the Natural Resources Board continue this commitment as they get this plan over the finish line.

“Sierra Club has been honored to serve on the Wolf Management Plan Committee, and we forward to continuing to engage as the state and Wisconsin Tribes work to manage Wisconsin’s wolf population.”
