There are always volunteer opportunities available for those of you who want to make a difference on environmental issues. We are recruiting for general team members for every committee as well as for specific leadership roles, all listed below. Ready for 100 Campaigns: There are 4 ongoing Ready for 100% clean energy campaigns: Milwaukee, Wauwautosa, Fitchburg and La Crosse. If you are interested in starting your own campain where you live, please get in touch!
General Volunteer Needs:
- Office Work: We are looking for volunteers to help with the quarterly Muir View newsletter, filing, database work, mailings, donation acknowledgement, etc.
- Completing Sierra Club work hours for Community Shares of Wisconsin (CSW): Each year we provide volunteers to help with mailings, campaign material preparation and delivery, baking cookies, and other activities associated with CSW’s workplace giving campaign.
- Website Volunteers: Assist Chapter and Groups with Drupal website maintenance and organization.
- Facebook, Instagram and Twitter Admins: Dedicate time to create and schedule content, to increase our number of followers, to track insights and to recommend and implement tactics to increase the effectiveness of our social media platforms.
Conservation Subcommittees:
In order to continue to fight for clean air, clean water, an wildlife the Sierra Club-John Muir Chapter has conservation issue subcommittees. The subcommittees assist our conservation committee by creating and implementing campaign plans, organizing events, and communicating with the media, legislators, agency staff, the public, and our members.
Water Sentinels: protects water quality and supply by pushing for inspection and enforcement of factory farms or Concentrated Animal Feed Operations (CAFOs), monitoring water, and protecting the Great Lakes.
- Seeking detail oriented individuals passionate about clean water in Wausau, Janesville, La Crosse and Greenbay.
Beyond Coal to Clean Energy: Working to move Wisconsin beyond coal, gas, and nuclear to cleaner energy solutions, by fighting individual coal plants, promoting energy efficiency and conservation and clean, renewable solar and wind energy. There are currently two active Beyond Coal campaigns in Wisconsin:
- Madison, MGE Go Coal Free
- Oak Creek, We Energies Go Coal Free
Beyond Oil through Clean Transportation: Leading the charge to reduce oil consumption by reducing demand (through mass transit and bicycling) and stopping out-of-control highway spending. Helping to re-prioritize the state transportation budget and advocate for Regional Transportation Authorities.
Mining Safeguards: Working to protect the Penokee Hills from Gogebic Taconite's proposed massive taconite mine and improve safeguards for sand mining.
Protecting Native Forests & Wildlife: Working to restore sustainable, science-based management to wolf, deer, and forest policy in Wisconsin.
- Outreach: This person is responsible for reaching out to groups and allies to partner on activities, events, etc
- Communications: This person(s) is responsible for working on press releases, blogs, articles, social media etc.
- Facilitator: Schedules and chairs meetings, sends out reminders about the meetings, assigns a note taker and other tasks during the meetings.
- Volunteer Outreach: Helps on board new members and introduce them to the team
Tar Sands Pipeline Protection: Working to protect Lake Superior from Enbridge’s dangerous proposal to build oil pipelines through Wisconsin and under the Great Lakes.
- Greeter: Welcomes and engages new people; orients them to the team (the main campaigns and how they work) and checks in with members to make sure they are satisfied with their participation.
- Delegate: Responsibilities include representing the Tar Sands Team on Madison 350's Board (Coordinating Council) and sending monthly updates to Sierra Club's Executive Committee and local groups along the line.
- Communications (Sierra Club): Responsible for sending email blasts and blogs to do with the Tar Sands Team and actions to Sierra Club members.
- Coalition Support: Responsible for sending out reminders and notes about the coalition calls.
- Event Planning Team: Helps plan rallies and other events in protest of pipeline construction and to assist with awareness and fundraising.
- Speaker Bureau Team: Reach out to and talk to groups in Madison and around the state about tar sands/pipeline/etc. Training will be provided.
Organizational Committees:
Political Committee: The Political Committee is looking for volunteers to assist with questionnaires, legislative score cards, phone banking, etc.
Executive Committee: Serving on our Executive Committee (prior Sierra Club volunteer experience recommended)
Fundraising Committee: Assisting with fundraising house parties; stamping, sealing, and addressing fundraising letters; thanking donors; procuring silent auction donations and event sponsors; major donor meetings; grant proposals, workplace giving, etc.
Membership Committee: Works to plan and implement campaigns to increase and maintain our strong membership base (i.e., recruiting new members and supporting local groups).
Youth Caucus: Group of 18-30 year olds that work to increase the number of young members in the Sierra Club-John Muir Chapter.
Legislative Committee: Researches bills at the legislature and makes recommendations to the Executive Committee about positions, creates and delivers public testimony, meets with legislators to discuss Sierra Club priorities and issue positions. Resonsible for letting Sierra Club members about actions to take for or against legislation, such as attending a town hall or participating in a public comment period.
Equity, Inclusion and Justice Committee: Promotes diversity and equity within the Sierra Club-John Muir Chapter by planning trainings on inclusion and diversity, creating a welcoming environment, and ensuring that our envirnmental work is inclusive in nature and fosters connections between diverse populations in the state.
