In Memphis, XAI has established artificial intelligence operations that rely on power-generating turbines, raising significant environmental justice concerns in South Memphis communities due to air pollution impacts. While the community's fight against these pollution sources continues, we've secured one meaningful victory for water conservation.
Sierra Club Tennessee's Chicakasaw Group and Chapter working in coalition with SELC, Young Gifted & Green, MCAP (Memphis Community Against Pollution) and Protect Our Aquifer, the Memphis City Council has approved a tertiary water treatment plant to be completed within 8 months. Instead of drawing from the precious Memphis Sand Aquifer, this facility will treat processed water to cool XAI's computer systems. The plant's expanded capacity will also provide cooling water to the local TVA power plant and a steel company, further reducing industrial demands on the aquifer.
While this water conservation win doesn't address the ongoing air quality impacts from XAI's operations, it represents one step forward in the larger environmental justice struggle in South Memphis. The community continues to advocate for cleaner air and environmental protections in the face of industrial development.
