Sierra Club Endorses Tricia Zunker for Congress

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 31, 2020

MADISON- The Sierra Club today announced the endorsement of Tricia Zunker (D-Wausau) for election to the 7th Congressional District of Wisconsin.  Zunker is facing GOP candidate Tom Tiffany in the May 12 Special Election due to the resignation of Sean Duffy.

The Sierra Club has endorsed Tricia Zunker because she will work in Congress to boldly address climate disruption and ensure our families and children have clean air and water.  Tricia Zunker’s record as President of the Wausau School Board and as a Justice on the Ho-Chunk Nation Supreme Court demonstrate her commitments to environmental, social, and racial justice.  She is a Tribal Member of the Ho-Chunk Nation and believes strongly in our duty and obligation to protect our shared land.

The Sierra Club has endorsed Tricia Zunker because the residents of the 7th Congressional District can’t trust Tom Tiffany not to continue his disastrous voting record if elected.  Tiffany led efforts to undermine state protections for mining and rubber-stamped Scott Walker’s agenda that rolled back water, air, and wetlands protections.  Instead of creating jobs, Tiffany hurt the state’s economy by voting to kill new wind energy projects, high speed rail, commuter rail and other transit projects, Focus On Energy, and more.

“Tricia Zunker will be an environmental leader in Congress,” said Elizabeth Ward, John Muir Chapter Director.  “We are confident Tricia Zunker will continue her commitment to protecting our clean air, clean water and special places in Wisconsin and throughout the country.  The Sierra Club is proud to endorse Tricia Zunker and we urge Wisconsin voters to help elect the first Native American from Wisconsin to Congress.”

“Tom Tiffany’s voting record in the legislature has been a disaster on environmental and clean energy issues,” said Dave Blouin, Political Committee Chair.  “Tiffany has helped lead the state in a race to the bottom by gutting environmental regulations for mining and other polluting industries, and gutting important conservation programs that made Wisconsin great.  Wisconsin can’t afford to send Tiffany to Congress to rubber-stamp President Trump’s agenda just as he did for Scott Walker.”
