Legislation to Prevent Excessive Motor Vehicle Noise

Vermont Bill S.66 was passed in the Vermont Senate to regulate excessive noise from motor vehicles by prohibiting inadequate or modified mufflers that produce loud noise. The Bill now awaits passage in the VT House of Representatives.

Excessive noise has detrimental effects on public health, quality of life, and the environment.

According to the Vermont Public Health Association, exposure to high noise levels is associated with elevated blood pressure, heart disease, sleep deprivation, headaches, and chronic fatigue.

Excessive motor vehicle noise diminishes the quality of life and the value of property in residential areas. Modifications to vehicles that cause an increase in noise can also increase emissions of pollutants.
